The
Eurasians with their fusion of Western and Asian parentage,
have a unique and versatile heritage of performing arts which
embody their outward-looking perspective.
In
1991 the Eurasian Association organized its first Heritage
Day and a dance group was formed. This dance troupe with
a change in members has since been promoting the Eurasian
heritage through folk dances and sketches of the Eurasian
way of life at both public and private functions.
The
Eurasian folk dances in Singapore, predominately Portuguese
in their dance steps, music and costumes were influenced by
Portuguese folk dances.
In
1997 at the invitation of the Macau Government our dancers
were given a three day dance workshop in Macau. At the
end of this workshop our Association was presented with
30 sets of ladies and 15 sets of men's costumes. These
are original costumes and come from the province of Minho
in Portugal.
A
few members from the dance troupe paid a visit to Portugal
in September 2001. To meet with the Portuguese dance members
for exchange of ideas.
The
dance troupe has represented the Eurasian Community in several National Day Parades.
